Digital radiography
- Did you take x-rays when you were in a dental office?
- If yes, did you try digital radiography before?
- How did you feel?
With the development of technology, dental technology is constantly being updated, digital radiography is more common to see in hospitals and dental hygienist schools. However, some dental offices still use traditional film radiography instead of digital radiography. The most common reason why some small dental offices have not converted to digital radiography is due to the cost and labor put into installing new machines and training staff on their usage (CADH, 2014).
What is digital radiography?
Digital radiography is actually similar to traditional dental X-rays with using film: With digital radiography, a sensor will be inserted into your mouth to directly capture images, data of your teeth during examination, immediately transferring it to a computer system.
What are the benefits?
- The film is processed immediately and available for viewing, without taking time to develop.
- Less radiation needed. “Digital X-rays gives 70% less exposure to radiation than conventional X-rays” (CADH, 2014).
- Enhance digital images with a range of processing techniques (such as changing brightness and contrast).
- Images can be stored on the computer.
- Digital radiography produces larger photos to better access hard-to-see cavities.
- In the long run, it is cheaper and more environmentally friendly.
- Offer 256 shades of grey versus.

DEXIS CariVu:
What is DEXIS CariVu?
“DEXIS CariVu™ is a portable caries detection device that uses patented transillumination technology to support the identification of occlusal, interproximal and recurrent carious lesions and cracks” (ADA, 2019).
What makes CariVu unique?
Safe, No-dose Alternative (non-ionizing radiation)
Ideal technology which used for people who may not be able to have traditional X-rays taken. For example: children, pregnant women.
Transillumination Imaging Technology
The clinician can see through the tooth, exposing any carious lesions due to it embraces the tooth and bathes in a safe near-infrared light and the enamel looks transparent, while the porous lesions appear dark.
Early Caries Detection and prevention
99% accuracy to detect the early caries .
Carivu is easy to use for any practitioner and DEXIS Software Integration makes the CariVu workflow simple.
